Concluding Laws in the Book of the Covenant Part 2

Exodus 23:10-19

Introduction:

Theme: Two final matters for understanding God’s laws in the book of the covenant so you remember the reason why laws are so necessary.

I. Laws are necessary for Societal Order vv. 1-9  See Previous Week’s Sermon Notes

II. Laws are necessary for Sabbath Observance vv. 10-12

A. Sabbath for the land vv. 10-11 (Leviticus 25, 27; 25:3-12, 20-22; 2 Chronicles 36:20-21)

B. Sabbath for the people and animals v. 12 (Leviticus 25:23; Exodus 20:11; 31:12-17; Joshua 23:6-7; Zechariah 13:2; Psalm 16:4)

Jesus is the hope of sinners (1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Galatians 1:4 = “our sins;” 2:16; Romans 3:20)

Conclusion:

The Three Annual Feasts vv. 14-19 (cf. Exodus 34:18, 21-23; Deuteronomy 16:16)

A. The number of feasts to celebrate vv. 14, 17 (Deuteronomy 16:16-17)

1. Feast of Unleavened Bread (Passover) v. 15 (Exodus 12-13)

What it commemorates – associated with Passover, commemorating the LORD’s deliverance of the firstborn when the angel of death passed over him . . . and the hasty exodus from Israel in which the people ate their bread without leaven (12:17-18, 33-34, 39; Deuteronomy 16:3; Exodus 34:18; Leviticus 23:5-6)

Length of time – seven days

Time of year – Abib (mo. 1; called Nisan, after the exile Nehemiah 2:1; Esther 3:7) – March/April

2. Feast of the Harvest (Weeks/Pentecost) v. 16a

What it commemorates – celebrates the end of the wheat harvest and bringing in the first fruits (Exodus 34:26; Leviticus 23:15-17); later on, the giving of the Law at Sinai (2 Chronicles 15:10); the sending of the Holy Spirit to the church takes place during this feast in Acts 2

Length – one day (beginning on the fiftieth day after Passover Sabbath)

Time of year – Sivan (mo. 3) – May/June (Deuteronomy 16:9-10)

3. Feast of the Ingathering (Booths/Tabernacles) v. 16b

What it commemorates – the wilderness wanderings when Israel lived in booths during their sojourn Leviticus 23:34, 39-43; Deuteronomy 16:13; John 7:2, 8-10

Length – seven days

Time of year – Tishri (mo. 7) – September/October (five days after the Day of Atonement)

B. The offerings associated with the feasts vv. 18-19

1. The sacrifice associated with the Feast of Unleavened Bread v. 18 (Exodus 34:25 and 12:7-11)

2. The offering associated with the Feast of Harvest v. 19a (34:26; 22:29)

3. The sacrifice of a young goat v. 19b (Deuteronomy 14:21; Numbers 29:16)
