The Land for the Taking

Exodus 23:20-33

Introduction:

Theme: Four crucial factors for Israel in taking the promised land, so you recognize the relationship between the Lord’s purpose and man’s responsibility in it.

The Response of Israel to the Angel of the LORD v. 21 Three-fold

a. Be on their guard

b. Obey his voice

c. Not be rebellious against him (cf. Psalm 78:17, 40, 56)

The Spirit in Christians – to dwell in us and to seal us for the day of redemption (1 Corinthians 6:19; Ephesians 4:30). A pledge of our inheritance as a guarantee (Ephesians 1:13-14; 2 Corinthians 1:22; 5:5). Obedience to His commands (John 14:15, 21).

2. The Requirements of Israel vv. 24-25a

a. Regarding the nations’ gods (cf. 20:5)

i Not worship them

ii Not serve them

b. Regarding the nations’

i Not behave like them (cf. Ephesians 4:17; 5:3-4,11-12; 2 Peter 4:1-3; Romans 13:12-13)

ii Destroy them (cf. 34:13; Deuteronomy 7:5; 12:3; 2 Corinthians 10:3-5)

c. Regarding the LORD

Serve Him (cf. Hebrews 13:15; “confess” – Romans 10:9-10; 1 John 1:9; 2:23; 4:2-3, 15; Hebrews 12:28; Romans 12:1; 1 Corinthians 10:31)
